New team to crack down on illegal number plates in England

The UK government has funded a new National Roads Policing Coordination Centre (NRPCC) to target drivers using illegal number plates across England. This centre will bring together police forces to share information, improve teamwork, and use data more effectively, including trialling new technology like specialised goggles to detect unreadable number plates. Illegal number plates are often used to avoid fines for speeding, parking, or clean air zones, and are linked to organised crime. Drivers using an incorrectly displayed number plate can face a fine of up to £1,000. The government is also considering stronger penalties and reviewing number plate standards as part of its Road Safety Strategy.
